Message From Our Minister:
Dr. Andrew J. Hairston
A MOBILE GOD
There by the rivers of Babylon, There we sat down and wept, When we remembered Zion. Upon the willows in the midst of it , we hung our harps. For there our captors demanded of us songs, And our foremasters mirth saying, Sing us ONE of the Songs of Zion , How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land. Psalm 137: 1—4, NASV
Essential to a strong and abiding faith is a vibrant concept of our God that makes Him accessible to us at all times and under all circumstances. Accordingly, we need a God who is forever present and who is not tied down to locations and circumstances. Yes, He must be a God upon whom we can call and reach in all times, circumstances and conditions. Yet, for many of us this is hardly the case. In this reference Israel's Babylonian captors chided the Israelites saying to them sing us one of the songs of Zion.
To that request the Israelites responded that they could hardly sing the songs of Zion in a strange land, namely in Babylon. Israel’s response was that they had to be in Zion with the temple and all associated with Zion to sing the “Songs of Zion.” They said, they could not do that in a strange or foreign land. Sometimes we witness this feeling among our brothers who find it difficult to worship God in a congregation that is different, distinct and unlike the church where they previously worshipped . They too, cannot sing the songs of Zion in a strange land. |
